Identified as talented at the ages of 9, 10, 13 and 15 she was discouraged to paint.  In 2000 the first series of painting took place in her studio out of her Arizona home. Refusing to show or sell paintings until 2002 and after working with Wanda Poindester on the Ponies Del Pueblo project at the Tucson Pima Arts Council as a volunteer.

In December of 2011 Kay became the Chairman of the Board for The Southern Sudanese Community of San Diego.

Kay Rivers was best known in the Santa Cruz Valley of Southern Arizona as an Artist of Color. “Color, form and imagination burst forth from the fine art that fills the gallery of Kay Rivers home and studio” writes Karen Walenga of the Sahuarita Sun newspaper. Her works are surreal, abstract and impressionistic. She considers herself an Impressionistic. From late 2004 to mid 2005 Kay Rivers was the featured solo artist for the Raw Art tour in Southern Arizona. Featured in the GV News newspaper and Tucson Style.com at the Traveling art show in Southern Arizona. She had done over 25 solo shows, The Traveling Art Show (TPAC), Tubac Village, Arizona, featured at Laredo’s and recognized as a Who’s Who Artist and Entrepreneur by Cambridge Who’s Who publication.

Volunteering, donating and showing works in Southern California are the San Diego Spirits Festival   Juneteen Celebrations in Oceanside, A Taste Of Art Bar-B-Que Style in Moreno Valley, California, Dancing Under The Stars in LA, La Jolla Festival Of The Arts in La Jolla, ArtWalk in Little Italy, ArtWalk On The Bay, SeaPort Village, TGIF Jazz In The Park in Carlsbad, The Celebration Of Womanhood on Harbor Island in San Diego, A Sculpture Art Affair in Escondido, Pampered Paints in Denver, Colorado and many many non-profit organizations helping mentally challenged and physically challenged people and, children.

 Open Studio is an 10 year on going event from April until October in which she opens her studio.
